- Abstract
This article explores the situation of indigenous people in Australia. It touches on the discrepency between the Australian Government's internal and external positions with regard to 'native' peoples. It examines contemporary debates in anthropology, contrasting the views of Dr Donald Thompson with those of the chief anthropological adviser to the Government, Professor Elkin, Thompson arguing for indigenous ownership of their lands while Elkin arguing that this will be distructive. The article supports the former position. It then outlines a range injustices which Aborigines face, discusses the attempts of the North Australian Workers' Union to take up the fight for Aborigines, and the Sheet Metal Workers' Unions call for a Royal Commission.
