Abstract

In this letter to the editor which responds to an article criticising the role of universities in the s11 protests, Brian Costar wrote:

'IN "Comrie attacks protest course" (Herald Sun, November 27), it was reported that "S11 organisers have already spoken to students at Monash University's politics department".

'On September 27, members of the Monash politics department organised a seminar entitled "Evaluating S11".

'Twelve speakers, including me and two S11 organisers, addressed the seminar. The audience comprised academics, postgraduate and undergraduate students and members of the public.

'Debate was sometimes vigorous, with some agreeing and others disagreeing with the aims and tactics of S11.

'Organising debates on important and current issues is one contribution universities can make to society.'

This newspaper cutting was deposited in the Reason in Revolt archive in around 2011 and was filed under published resource ID PR0002367. A full text digital version of the letter was also published on the Dow-Jones Factiva online database and accessed by Reason in Revolt on 16 February 2022.
