Details
The Jindyworobak anthology was published annually from 1938 to 1953. Edited by Rex Ingamells, Jindyworobak was devoted exclusively to Australian verse.
According to Rex Ingamells (1913-1955), 'Jindyworobak' is 'an aboriginal word meaning "to annex, to join"'. Describing the Jindyworobak positon, Ingamells wrote of the effort 'to free Australian art from whatever alien influences trammel it, that is, to bring it into proper contact with its material'. In particular 'a clear recognition of environmental values' was presented as the 'thought-idiom' in which the 'inhibited individuality of the race will be released' and 'Australian culture will exist'.
While subscribing to the common view of Aboriginal culture as dead or dying, Ingamells argued for an 'assimiliation' of 'the spirit' of Aboriginal culture into the European-Australian experience of land. This, he argued, 'is essential to the honest development of Australian culture'.
