Details

The literary journal, Southerly, was established in 1939 by the English Association, Sydney.

The English Association [London] was founded in 1906 by a group of English teachers and scholars concerned that English, then struggling for recognition as a subject in its own right, should be given due recognition in secondary and tertiary curricula.

The Sydney branch was founded in 1923 with the same aims in view.
