Summary

Campaign Against Moral Persecution (CAMP) was founded in Sydney in September, 1970. It was one of the first gay rights activist groups in Australia. Originally intending to respond to media misinformation, it rapidly became national organisation with branches in all state capital cities and many university campuses. The group published a magazine called CAMP Ink from 1970 to 1977. CAMP was broadly inclusive and took on all the issues of the day from law reform to coming out to living a gay life. 'Camp' was the word mostly commonly used by Australian homosexuals for themselves before the arrival of 'gay' from USA in 1972.
