Political Movement and Political Philosophy

Details

Anarchism is a form of political thought in which society is conceived without rulers. (For a more comprehensive definition, see Peter Kropotkin. For an extensive archive of anarchist literature see The Anarchist Library.)

There is a long tradition of anarchist activism in Australia, dating back to the nineteenth century - the Melbourne Anarchist Club, influenced by the revolutionary anarchism of Mikhail Bakunin, was formed in 1886.

Anarchists such as Montague Miller (who fought at the Eureka Stockade) were active in the syndicalist union the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) from 1905 until 1917.

However, after the IWW was banned in 1916, and the rise of Bolshevism after 1917, anarchist forms of radical politics were often marginalised in Australia.

Jim Dawson promoted anarchist ideas in the 1940s, and published a newspaper "The Southern Advocate for Workers' Councils" from 1948 to 1949.

From 1949 to 1974, the Libertarian Society at Sydney University and the urban sub-culture known as 'The Push' together formed a highly influential political and social movement which was mainly informed by Max Nomad's concept of 'pessimisitc' or 'unutopian' anarchism. Nomad argued that political programs aimed at destroying the state were illusory. However, many anarchists within the Push became highly politicised and engaged in direct action relating to draft resistance, civil liberities, and other issues. For example, activists such as Wendy Bacon were instrumental in supporting Green Bans against building developers which were imposed by the Builders' Labourers' Federation New South Wales Branch.

In the 1960s and 1970s, anarchists were actively involved in opposing the Viet Nam War, with Geoff Mullen and Mike Matteson becoming prominent draft-resisters.

From the mid-1980s to the 2000s, anarchism became more influential within radical activist circles, in particular in counter-cultural youth politics and anti-globalisation movements. In 2011-2012, anarchist ideas played a key role in the 'occupy' movement.
